This is Montepulciano, Italy in late November. On a 12 day painting and photography trip, we faced many foggy mornings. Sometimes the fog didn’t lift until afternoon. A local gave us a tip that we could escape the fog by going higher into the hill towns. I really love the contrast of the rough textured roofs against the soft somber background. The challenge with editing was to bring out the buildings without undoing the over-all softness of the scene.

We stayed at the Poderi Arcangelo farmhouse and winery B&B located just outside of San Gimignano, Italy. The days were short and the vines were in hibernation, and yet the landscape was still colorful. The wine of this region is the best! Short days (dark by 5:00) and frequent fog was the challenge for both painting and photography. I liked the contrast and composition of this scene and wanted to bring out the rich color without undoing the mysterious feel.
